The Play that Goes Wrong is a hilarious play-within-a-play farcical comedy portraying the Cornely Drama Society’s doomed opening night of The Murder of Haversham Manor. Though the drama society does their best for the show to go on they seem to encounter every possible theatrical mishap along the way.
As a play within a play, this show had the fun challenge of designing The Murder of Haversham Manor a la the Cornley Drama Society. While the troupe is well meaning and full of passion for theatre, it’s obvious that they are not so technically proficient, so I chose and created music that is perhaps a bit more over the top than I would have otherwise chosen. This included dramatic, soap opera style stingers and spanish bull fighting music during a sword fight.
As a slapstick comedy, I also got to incorporate foley elements into the show as well to reinforce the moments of physical comedy with slapsticks, crash boxes, log drums, and more.
